A push by some Nevada public officials to seek control of a portion of the state’s federally controlled lands suffered a blow Thursday when the concept was taken off the table for discussion at a meeting of state lawmakers, a move that drew legislators’ objections.

Ex-lawmaker Brooks could soon be free man

Having spent nearly a year-and-a-half behind bars, former Democratic Assemblyman Steven Brooks could be released from custody Thursday, his lawyer said. Brooks pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, admitting that he had been addicted to marijuana while carrying a .357 Magnum Smith & Wesson revolver.

Man accused of threatening Las Vegas officers on Facebook

A man accused of threatening two Las Vegas Metro officers on Facebook was ordered held on $500,000 bail Wednesday. DeAndre Allen, whom prosecutors said was affiliated with several gangs, was indicted on two counts of aggravated stalking, two counts of stalking with the use of a computer, one count of intimidating a public officer, and two counts of publishing matter inciting breach of peace.
