The Dodge Durango commercials featuring America’s favorite fictional 1970s news anchor, Ron Burgundy, from the movie “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” have gone viral. In more than 70 videos, appearing on TV and online, actor Will Ferrell appeared in character from his movie.
The campaign has moved the needle, and sales were up nearly 40 percent nationally at year end, according to company officials.
Locally, Chapman Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram General Manager Don Hamrick took it even further.
With the help of Chapman’s local advertising firm, Quillin Advertising, Public Relations &Social Media, Hamrick produced and appeared in five TV commercial spots. Appearing as “Don Normandy,” Emmy-award winning professionals were beckoned from Los Angeles to bring his makeup, dress and persona to life.
“We really had a lot of fun with these commercials and it was great to step out of the comfort zone and capitalize on an entertainment trend,” Hamrick said. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”
In addition, the dealership rented a movie theater and offered its customers and social media followers an advanced screening of the “Anchorman 2” movie before its release to the public. Complete with a red carpet and a dedicated social media hashtag, the event garnered buzz and was a trending topic on its social platforms, gaining new followers throughout the evening.
The 2014 Durango was on display outside the theater and “Don Normandy” posed for photos with guests.
The Dodge Durango boasts refreshed styling, an updated multimedia system and a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. With improved fuel economy, the Durango offers three rows of seats that can be configured in several ways. It is offered in five trim levels: SXT, Rallye, Limited, R/T and Citadel.
