The first of monthly Latin Chamber of Commerce early-morning breakfast meetings drew a near capacity crowd to the showroom of Planet Hyundai Sahara at 7150 W. Sahara Ave. on April 4.
The event, orchestrated by Planet Hyundai General Sales Manager Jason Laguna, included the announcement of Latin-related activities, as well as introducing the group to Hyundai.
Among the announcements was the future addition of various programs and television shows including a Latino version of “Nevada Week in Review” on television station MundoFox 34, along with major redevelopment of the Boulevard Mall area along Maryland Parkway south of Sahara Avenue.
According to speaker Christopher Roman, president and CEO for MundoFox, there are big plans for the Latino community in Southern Nevada.
“I was honored and flattered that so many people showed up for this,” said Roman, a resident of Las Vegas since 1994. “It’s a real credit when a business like this one disrupts its business day to host an event like this.”
The key to the increased media attention is local coverage, which Roman said is lacking especially for the Latino community. An estimated 25-40 percent of most Latino television news content is from elsewhere and that’s about to change, he said.
Otto Merida, president and CEO of the local Latin Chamber of Commerce, said the group gathers at various businesses each Friday as part of Breakfast Among Friends.
“It was the best event we have ever had,” Merida said. “We had never been to an automobile dealership before and this one was the beginning of a great relationship.”
“Everyone is a winner here today,” said Laguna. “It’s all about people and this will be a great relationship for a long, long time.
Planet Hyundai General Manager Paul Pelletier also praised the event.
“We hit a home run with this one,” Pelletier said. “It was a great way to familiarize ourselves within the Latino community and is an awesome way to start our day.”
Prizes were given away, including tickets to the April 5-6 Michael Jordan golf tournament at Shadow Creek Golf Course.
