Planet Hyundai supports Toys for Tots golf tourney

Planet Hyundai Sahara and Planet Hyundai Centennial are helping make certain that the 10th annual U.S. Marine Corps Golf Classic Toys for Tots golf tournament at Sunrise Vista Golf Course at Nellis Air Force Base is a resounding success. The tournament will be played Nov. 11.

The dealerships will be hole sponsors for the tournament that is expecting a sellout field of 144 golfers. Each year the tournament generates hundreds of toys for needy children who might otherwise go without during the holiday season.

"We are so grateful to have the Planet Hyundai dealerships involved in this year's event," said Thomas McGrath, chairman of Toys for Tots Las Vegas. "This tournament has grown every year and it continues to grow only because of the involvement of dedicated businesses like Planet Hyundai."

McGrath and Planet Hyundai co-owner Ron Coury both served as Marines.

"I have known Ron for 10 years now," said McGrath. "He contacted me and said he'd like to be on board for Toys for Tots. Every one of us who has served in the Marines understands that the Toys for Tots program brings a little bit of Christmas to every underprivileged child.

" Everything raised from this tournament stays in Southern Nevada."

Staff Sgt. Charles Eckart, Las Vegas Toys for Tots coordinator for Southern Nevada, is in his second year with the holiday campaign.

"I do this to help the community," said the 27-year-old Eckart, who has served five tours in the Middle East since 2003. "This is something that the Marine Corps Reserves support wholeheartedly. We are the ones who go out into the community seeking involvement in this very worthy program."

Eckart said the 2010 drive enabled the Marines to reach 45,500 children in the Las Vegas community.

McGrath said the tournament last netted $25,000.

"Our goal this year is to raise $35,000," said McGrath.

Coury, a corporal in the Marines from 1972-'74, praised the program.

"I wanted to get both of our stores involved with Toys for Tots," he said. "We are a community-oriented, locally owned and operated business. This particular program puts smiles on the faces of children who would probably be left out were it not for the Marine Corps' efforts. Toys may be dropped off at either Planet Hyundai location in our Toys for Tots bins for Christmas distribution to needy children by our local Marines."

This year's golf tournament is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.
