UNLV vs. COLORADO STATE: FINAL RECAP

Final: Colorado State 41, UNLV 28. The Rebels lose a heartbreaker when Colorado State tailback Gartrell Johnson rushes in from 10 yards for a touchdown with 9 seconds left. His 2-point scoring run makesthe score 35-28. UNLV couldn’t stop Johnson, who finished with 191 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries. UNLV (3-3, 0-2 Mountain West Conference) takes a major hit in trying to become bowl eligible. The Rebels also have lost back-to-back games after their best start in five years. Colorado State is 3-2, 1-0. UNLV rallied from 27-14 down in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 1-yard run by tailback Frank Summers and a 21-yard pass from quarterback Omar Clayton to wide receiver Jerriman Robinson. But then the Rams answered with a 12-play, 80-yard drive to win the game. They added a final touchdown on the final play when UNLV tried the California Bears multiple lateral play and the Rams’ John Mosure grabbed the loose ball and ran into the end zone.

End of third quarter: Colorado State 27, UNLV 14. The Rams score first in the quarter after defensive end Tommie Hill bats a pass to himself for an interception at the Rebels’ 24-yard line. UNLV, though, stiffens defensively, forcing a 29-yard field goal by kicker Jason Smith to extend the lead to 20-14 midway through the period. The Rebels try to cut the lead to three points, but kicker Ben Jaekle just misses a 53-yard field goal to the right with 4:42 remaining. The Rams take advantage, coming right back with a 46-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Billy Farris to wide receiver Rashaun Greer for a 27-14 lead with 2:22 left. Greer, a Mojave High School graduate, has seven catches for 203 yards.

Halftime: Colorado State 17, UNLV 14. Colorado State cuts UNLV’s lead to 14-10 by going 85 yards on 10 plays, capping it with tailback Gartrell Johnson’s 3-yard touchdown run with 8:32 left in the second quarter. Then the Rams use another long drive, going 98 yards on just four plays. Quarterback Billy Farris’ 62-yard pass to wide receiver Rashaun Green keys the series, putting the ball at the Rebels’ 3-yard line, where Johnson scores from on the next play with 2:47 left.

UNLV FIRST QUARTER RECAP

First quarter: UNLV 14, Colorado State 3. The Rams start strong, forcing a three-and-out and then immediately capitalizing with a 44-yard pass from quarterback Billy Farris to wide receiver Rashaun Greer, a Mojave High School graduate. That sets up a 24-yard field goal from kicker Jason Smith and 3-0 lead. UNLV comes right back with a 12-play, 66-yard drive. It appears over when UNLV quarterback Omar Clayton is intercepted, but a roughing the pass penalty on Rams linebacker Jeff Horinek keeps the drive alive, and the Rebels go ahead 7-3 on an option pitch to wide reciver Ryan Wolfe, who scores from 11 yards. On the ensuing kickoff, UNLV’s Beau Orth forces a fumble that Chris Brogden recovers at Colorado State’s 9-yard line. Clayton’s 2-yard scoring pass three plays later to wide receiver Casey Flair gives the Rebels a 14-3 lead with 3:29 left.

UNLV END OF FIRST QUARTER

After giving up an early field goal, UNLV scored two touchdowns in just 1:35 and carry a 14-3 lead into the second quarter. Ryan Wolfe scored on an option pitch to get UNLV on the board, and then Casey Flair caught a touchdown pass from Omar Clayton after Colorado State fumbled the kickoff. UNLV has the ball inside its own 20 as the second quarter begins.
