Most of the time, the phrase "good as gold" applies figuratively, not literally. But in the case of Lori Harrigan, it works both ways. A former star pitcher for the UNLV women's softball team, the 6-foot-1 left-hander -- appropriately nicknamed "Vegas" -- tossed a two-hitter during the indomitable U.S. Olympic softball team's gold-medal quest. Review-Journal readers joined the cheers, enabling Harrigan to rout her closest rival -- UNLV basketball player Liz Wolfe -- by more than 60 votes.
