As hometowns go, Las Vegas is about as unusual as you can get, heightening the irony of Greg Maddux's victory in our annual hometown hero poll. On the baseball field, Maddux is "The Greatest Pitcher You'll Ever See," to quote a Sports Illustrated headline. Off the field, he's an unassuming, apple-pie guy who's happiest out of the spotlight, except when his celebrity can promote a worthy cause. Unlike many Las Vegans who hit the jackpot, Maddux manages to keep his good fortune in perspective. Another star on the baseball diamond, former UNLV slugger Matt Williams, finished a close second.

Andre Agassi might not be winning as much money on the professional tennis circuit as he used to, but when it comes to serving up millions of dollars for local kids' charities he can't be beat. Not only does he donate his own time and money to the Andre Agassi Foundation and the groups it helps, he ropes in a host of celebrity pals for his Grand Slam for Children concerts to raise even more. No matter how many tennis tournaments he wins or loses, he'll always be an ace on our scorecard.
