Readers' Pick: FREED'S

4780 S. Eastern Ave.
Despite fresh bakeries popping up with the regularity of morning toast, readers remain loyal to a Las Vegas oven-wars veteran that's been baking a little bit of everything for satisfied locals since 1959. Could it be that Freed's "emergency wedding cakes" - ready with just two-hours' notice - gave it the edge this year over past winner Great Buns?

Our Pick: BAGEL CAFE

301 N. Buffalo Drive
You know your bagels are going to be fresh when you can watch them being shaped and baked in clear view through windows that separate the providers from the consumers at this friendly and often-bustling cafe. Its varied breeds of bagels are quite tasty and almost big enough to be replacement wheels for a kid's tricycle. It so happens we're always searching for foods with a dual purpose: Bananas as protection against ornery house cats, smashed tomatoes as early morning surprise decor for the mean-spirited neighbor's garage door; you know, that sort of thing. The cafe also features an alluring array of sweet treats.
