Barbecue RestaurantReaders' Pick: TONY ROMA'SMultiple locationsReaders tabbed Roma's high-profile restaurants that extend from the Best of the West Center at 2040 N. Rainbow Blvd., over to 620 E. Sahara Ave., downtown to 200 Fremont St. for an illuminating Fremont Street Experience show, then cross-town to Henderson where a Roma's opened at 555 Stephanie St. That's good coverage of prime dining areas, and ribs aficionados seem content with their consistent fare plus all the wet napkins they need to wipe away saucy grins and clothing stains. Last year's winner, the original Memphis Championship Barbecue slipped to second place over a year in which they hauled away prepared take-home ribs, etc. from neighborhood convenience stores. A few fresh locations, all scattered away from the Nellis-area store, could help its future fortunes. Our Pick: SCHULERS ROADHOUSE4755 Spring Mountain RoadThe city is still starving for more barbecue options - we still miss the sudden departure of Gates BBQ and its Kansas City-style goodies - but our No. 1 pick at present is Schulers, a modest little diner with lots of beers on tap that evokes the room's earlier days as a faux British pub. Quality-minded Schulers ships in award-winning ribs produced to much acclaim in the suburbs of Cincinnati and the fresh sauce is just a bit sweet and just a bit tart. Perfect for basting Bette Midler.
