Coffee ShopReaders' Pick BLUEBERRY HILL FAMILY RESTAURANTMultiple locationsReaders like the convenience and quick service at these modest pancake and coffee shops, the reasonable prices and plenty of lower-cost options for any squirming tykes in tow. That and the Hill's large lineup of menu offerings convinced enough price-wary readers to give it their nod of approval over second-place Denny's, the national chain that operates all over town. Our Pick: POPPA GAR'S1624 W. Oakey Blvd.Last year Poppa Gar's was our choice for Best American Restaurant, and now it's our winner in the coffee shop category. Whatever. You can still choose unusual dinner entrees such as brace of quail or simply linger over a steaming cup of coffee at 1930s-era counters that ring the inside of a room dominated by stuffed animal heads. Many were donated by local hunters whose spouses suggested their furry creature kills might look better elsewhere - like anywhere outside the house. The longtime waitresses are helpful just as 90-year-old founder "Poppa" Garland Miner continues to taste almost everything that comes out of his kitchen. And if Poppa's not happy, chefs are sent back to their steamy kitchens to try to get it right. This quirky place isn't always cheap, but we'll pay extra just to hear local cronies discussing the past and future of Las Vegas while savoring "Poppa's" good food.
