Readers' Pick: ANDRE'S FRENCH RESTAURANT

401 S. Sixth St.
There are a lot of local dining rooms that call themselves "gourmet" when "more expensive than you thought" would be a better definition. No problem, though, with long-running Andre's winning the readers' choice again, second place going to the well-established and profitable Tillerman Restaurant. Andre Rochat's upscale restaurant changes its classic French and modern dishes daily based on the best ingredients available. The care in preparation is evident when exciting meals are served in this cozy, French country-styled downtown hideaway that was converted from a large Spanish stucco home. Dine under the softly lighted trees on an enclosed brick patio that used to be a driveway, or duck inside to see imported wood walls, displays of old French tools and wine presses and small dining chambers. You'll leave saying, "That was worth it!"

Our Pick: CHINOIS LAS VEGAS

Forum Shops at Caesars,
3500 Las Vegas Blvd. South
Adding Las Vegas to the name of celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck's latest modern-concept restaurant was not just for show. The tony Asian-styled Chinois gives seating preference to locals (it always helps to phone ahead) just as Spago Las Vegas turned into Puck's highest-grossing restaurant by making locals feel they weren't intruding on the sunglass-wearing L.A. set or food-minded tourists and conventioneers from elsewhere. Chinois serves creative Asian food with intriguing twists, has a cafe sushi bar below and a stately dinner-only room upstairs; some seats come with views looking down on Forum Shops customers. And do try the cold sake served in chilled fresh-cut bamboo glasses.
