Ice Cream/Frozen Yogurt

Readers' Pick: BASKIN-ROBBINS 31 FLAVORS ICE CREAM & YOGURT STORE

Multiple locations
This chain brought ice cream out of the ice age when it began offering 31 different flavors way back in the 1960s, ending the days of chocolate, sort of strawberry or boring vanilla. The company has never looked back, growing steadily despite a memorable clinker called "Pink Bubblegum" that apparently had a secret agent that went directly to teeth fillings with mayhem on its mind. Readers have made B-R their winner, leaving second place space to the lighter yogurts served by TCBY.

Our Pick: LUV-IT FROZEN CUSTARD

505 E. Oakey Blvd.
Nothing against the chain parlors that have helped make frozen yogurt a lower-fat American staple, but there are times when you just have to have something different. Old-style Luv-It, a 24-year independent in Las Vegas, makes all manner of ice cream delights but it's the creamy frozen custard made daily that always leaves us smiling. The diet can wait!
