Readers' Pick: HARD ROCK CAFE

4775 Paradise Road
Many readers remember when the Hard Rock Cafe arrived to open the door for an onslaught of lively themed eateries that often put more emphasis on video screens, star memorabilia and flashy decor than quality cooking. The "eatertainment" market continues to expand in Las Vegas - the NASCAR Cafe will open in the Sahara by next year's race - despite a mood among many that a Depression-themed crash could be on the way. No matter. The now venerable Hard Rock serves more than T-shirts and its consistent American food is bolstered by rock music and display guitars once played by the masters. Second place went to Dive! - another early entry on the theme scene that is updating its nautical theme menu with newly added submarine sandwiches.

Our Pick: HIPPO & THE WILD BUNCH

4503 Paradise Road
Owner Georges LaForge's home-grown cartoon jungle-themed eatery is our pick in the theme division. It's hard to resist the quirky decor where funny-faced snakes dangle from the ceiling and pink hippos grin from atop vine-covered trees in this playful casual eatery. Fuel up on protein and herbal shakes and enjoy everything from custom pizzas and pastas to more aggressive fare that evokes LaForge's French background. The prices are easy, too. We also use Hippo for well-received kids' birthday parties, slipping out if we can to bet sports at the Hard Rock Hotel across the street.
