EAT AND DRINK
Vegetarian FoodReaders' Pick: WILD OATS COMMUNITY MARKET3455 E. Flamingo Road6720 W. Sahara Ave. Las Vegas still is missing a full-service all-vegetarian sit-down restaurant unless one includes the tiny cafes tucked into these organic-oriented markets. Others minus Wild Oats' large scope of natural items have quickly gone belly-up after failing to find enough Vegas vegans to support macrobiotic diners and vegetarian greasy spoons. The spread of fruits, vegetable dishes and all-natural produce makes the buffets at both Wild Oats a welcome switch from those often-uninspired hotel versions with carving stations and enough meaty entrees to think about a call for help from Oprah Winfrey. Second place went to the well-regarded Mediterranean Cafe & Market. Our Pick: MEDITERRANEAN CAFE & MARKET4147 S. Maryland ParkwayWe enjoy chatting with kindly owner Paymon Raouf, who has taken a one-door operation near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and slowly expanded it to include several more vacant office doors to produce an outdoor patio and provide more space in the kitchen and for stocking imported groceries. Listen and you'll learn plenty, then order up one of Payman's big chickpea-based falafels that compare favorably with any we've ever tried. Plenty of other veggie options makes the Mediterranean Cafe the place to be when your hunger doesn't extend to eating cooked farm animals.
