Local Sports EventReaders' Pick: NATIONAL FINALS RODEOReview-Journal readers tipped their 10-gallon hats to the cowboys and cowgirls who compete in their sport's World Series equivalent. Every year, the NFR sells out months in advance, drawing hundreds of thousands of fans to the Thomas & Mack Center -- and millions more watching on cable TV -- as top contenders vie in such events as bronc riding, barrel racing and steer wrestling. And did we mention it's the world's richest rodeo, with a record purse of more than $3 million last year? No wonder the NFR has found a home in Las Vegas. Finishing second: the Tyson/Holyfield heavyweight ear-biting -- oops, we mean boxing -- match. Our Pick: TYSON-HOLYFIELD FIGHTEar's looking at you, kids. Just when you thought the wild world of professional boxing couldn't sink any lower, along comes Mike Tyson to put the bite on Evander Holyfield -- not once but twice -- during their June 29 World Boxing Association heavyweight championship rematch at the MGM Grand Garden. Of course, it couldn't happen anywhere but Las Vegas, which has a strange way of bringing out the be(a)st in people. Just another black eye -- or should that be bloody ear? -- for Sin City's scarlet image.
