Local Sports TeamReaders' Pick: LAS VEGAS THUNDERThe delicious irony of ice hockey in the desert continues to light the fire of R-J readers, who give the Las Vegas Thunder its fourth straight victory in this category -- despite the team's troubled season, which saw the departure of longtime coach Chris McSorley and lingering questions about the franchise's future in Las Vegas. Now, if only our valiant International Hockey League franchise could win the Southwest Division as easily as it wins this Best of Las Vegas category every year. ... The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebel basketball team, meanwhile, dribbled into second place. Our Pick: UNLV REBELS BASKETBALLUniversity of Nevada, Las VegasBefore you accuse us of bandwagon-jumping, we feel duty-bound to let you know that we made this clairvoyant choice weeks before the UNLV Rebels' incredible resurrection at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, which put them in the running for the NCAA basketball championship for the first time since 1991. During the wacky WAC tournament, the upstart Rebels won four straight games at the Thomas & Mack Center to clinch the conference title. Home court advantage? We like to think it was invisible vibes from R-J Rebel rooters psychically pleading with the team to justify our quixotic pick.
