Readers' Pick: GOLDEN NUGGET

  • 129 Fremont St.
For the fifth year, readers put a decisive stamp of approval on the hotel that started turning Fremont Street around in the early '80s. While still setting a standard for Glitter Gulch attractiveness, service and specialty restaurants, the Nugget also holds its own on the bargain front with $1.25 well drinks and a big selection of beers, all comfortably priced from $1.50 to $2. Second-place Main Street Station was the only other significant vote-getter.

    Our Pick: MAIN STREET STATION

  • 200 N. Main St.
Fremont Street is looking better all the time, but this slightly distanced hotel raises the bar for downtown competition. The enormous buffet and the Triple 7 Brewpub scored solidly with locals, and the low-profile Pullman Grille is a hidden treasure for fine dining. The elegant trimmings offer an upscale feel throughout the casino, but aggressive video poker promotions -- such as a guaranteed-cash scratch card for four-of-a-kind winners -- remind you of the push for local business. If only all the downtown hotels would try as hard.
