HOTELS
LobbyReaders' Pick: THE MIRAGEThe Mirage set the stage for a lot of powerful competition when it opened, and the same corporation will surely top itself with the Bellagio this year. But readers still can't forget -- or find it hard to top -- the memory of a check-in desk with tropical fish behind it (as opposed to many a place with a lobby that smells fishy), and a glass-domed atrium that leads you through imposing foliage to the slot machine paradise beyond. The MGM Grand Hotel's massive lobby with its wall o' promo video behind the desk placed second. Our Pick: LUXORIf the MGM or Luxor teach us anything about the Strip, it's that mistakes can be corrected. The pyramid that seemed like a practical joke when it opened now has the feel of an upscale and authentically Egyptian hotel. Long marbled hallways provide a sense of separation between the hotel and casino. There are plenty of columns for a regal feeling, and some talking camels to keep it a little goofy.
