Outdoor Sign

Readers' Pick: RIO

  • 3700 W. Flamingo Road
Some traditions still hold, even if we took "neon" out of the designation to reflect all the full-motion video and LED lights popping out all over town. And the Rio's sign has become a modern-day tradition, outshining the competition for the past six years. The new, improved (more storm-resistant) sign at the Las Vegas Hilton was the only serious contender for second.

    Our Pick: SAHARA

  • 2535 Las Vegas Blvd. South
The lights on the south end of the Strip now outshine the north, which used to be the heart of the action. We're a little ambivalent about the interior remodeling job at the Sahara, but more enthusiastic about the new sign, which taps 40-plus years of logo recognition for the famous name, yet doesn't ignore the full-motion video either. The sign, plus the Christmas-style lighting of the new porte-cochere dome, draws attention back to an easily overlooked property.
