HOTELS
Strip Hotel![]() Readers' Pick: NEW YORK-NEW YORKThe novelty hasn't worn off yet. Readers voted the faux skyline as their "must herd visiting in-laws through" attraction for a second year, relegating their 1996 favorite, The Mirage, to a fairly close second. Apparently the only thing people don't like about the Little Apple is the underachieving "MADhattan" show. Everything else is a hit, and expansion plans are under way on annexed land -- ironic for a place that chose its theme because it had nowhere to go but up. Our Pick: DESERT INNAt first glance, the Desert Inn's full-court press for the high-end niche customer doesn't offer much to locals. We could live with that. With so many locals joints, there's no harm in a Strip hotel blowing us off for the out-of-town money. That said, once you go in to gander at the plushly remodeled surroundings, you might just go back. There's a coffee shop with a pool view and a fancy minibuffet serving sushi, a cozy swankiness in the new lounge, and the chance to see modern headliners such as Dennis Miller and Dana Carvey in old-Vegas intimacy in the classic Crystal Showroom. Along with the Hard Rock Hotel, the Desert Inn just might prove that bigger is not necessarily better.
