Arizona Getaway

Readers' Pick: SEDONA

  • South of Interstate 40, off state Route 89A, in northern Arizona
Las Vegans have a thing for red rocks. In addition to our own Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, R-J readers feel an affinity for the spectacular red rocks that surround this spiritually centered mecca for the hip and trendy. If you want to experience Sedona's past lives -- make that the lives of its past inhabitants -- check out the nearby Palatkicq archaeological site's cliff dwellings and rock art. R-J readers' second-favorite Arizona getaway? That perennial favorite, the Grand Canyon, of course.

    Our Pick: FLAGSTAFF

  • Junction of Interstates 40 and 17, in northern Arizona
Most visitors use Flagstaff as a departure point for spectacular scenic attractions. After all, Grand Canyon National Park; Sedona; Oak Creek Canyon; the Arizona Snowbowl ski area; and Sunset Crater, Walnut Canyon and Wupatki national monuments are all within an 80-mile radius. But there's also plenty to see and do in Flagstaff itself, whether it's a visit to the Museum of Northern Arizona, a sporting event at Northern Arizona University or a concert at the Coconino Center for the Arts.
