California Getaway

Readers' Pick: SAN DIEGO

  • Off Interstate 15 in Southern California
Of course, you have to drive beyond Interstate 15 to experience the full range of fun available to San Diego visitors. Interstate 8, westbound, will take you to Sea World or the beach, both refreshingly cool destinations for desert dwellers like us. Hit state Route 163 to reach Balboa Park, home of the San Diego Zoo, the Old Globe Theatre and several impressive museums. Dozens of other attractions beckon San Diego visitors -- but it's probably safe to skip the casinos on the Indian reservations east of town. Playing second fiddle to a magical city: the Magic Kingdom of Disneyland.

Our Pick: DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

  • North of Interstate 15, off California
state Route 127 in eastern California
Although we live in the desert, we're often blind to its magic. But a weekend in Death Valley provides a soul-restoring sojourn through weird and wonderful natural phenomena: towering mountains, parched salt flats, canyon walls etched by the wind, singing sand dunes. Humanity also has left its collective mark on the area, whether at abandoned mining operations or the Furnace Creek Inn, where golden-age Hollywood royalty relaxed in style. You can feel their ghosts -- along with all the other souls, lost and found, who have wandered these fabled trails.
