Local Disc Jockey

Readers' Pick: MELANIE

We like Melanie in the morning -- the show and the person -- just as much as you do. The drive-time veteran on KSNE-FM 106.5 does a wonderful job of taking the edge off of those ugly moments when you realize the day's gonna begin whether you want it to or not. She's funny, she's charming and she has a great radio voice, lilting and animated, but not overly so. Best of all, Melanie -- unlike some other morning jocks we might name -- doesn't take herself too seriously. Mark & Mercedes of KMXB-FM 94.1 placed second.

Our Pick: GINGER BRUNER

Like most of the on-air personalities -- calling them "disc jockeys" seems so crass -- at Southern Nevada's National Public Radio affiliate KNPR-FM 89.5, Ginger Bruner isn't exactly a household name. But Bruner does a consistently fine job of introducing classical music selections from 1 to 4 p.m. daily and presenting each Wednesday's edition of "Nevada Yesterdays," the wonderful series of often offbeat historical vignettes written by Frank Wright of the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society. Besides, we're seriously impressed that, for a time, Bruner played rock tuba in an area band.
