Last year, Lori Harrigan -- a former star pitcher on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas women's softball team and member of the gold medal-winning 1996 U.S. Olympic women's softball team -- swept both the readers' and staff picks in this category. Your selection of the deserving Harrigan again this year might be an indication that, no matter what they do to the Olympics -- f+iballroom dancing???f-i -- those magic Olympic moments are to be savored forever. Pro bowler Wendy Macpherson was your second-place pick.
Our Pick:
STEPHANIE KEEVER
Stephanie Keever, a graduate of Cimarron-Memorial High School, now plays golf as a freshman at Stanford University. While still in high school, Keever racked up all sorts of titles, including a state title, two Southern Conference titles and honorable mention recognition on the 1997 Girls Rolex Junior All America team of the American Junior Golf Association. Two weeks ago, she was ranked 11th in the collegiate Women's NCAA MasterCard Rankings. It's almost frightening to think how good Keever is going to be after four years of collegiate competition, but we can't wait to find out.
