Readers' Pick: OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE

For more than four decades, Opportunity Village has provided job training and employment opportunities to mentally disabled Southern Nevadans. Last year, when vandals damaged and stole materials used in the group's Magical Forest -- the annual Christmas attraction that is Opportunity Village's chief fund-raiser -- local businesses helped out to such a great degree that last year's Magical Forest was bigger and brighter than ever. Quite a testament to Opportunity Village's reputation in the community. Aid for Aids of Nevada, or AFAN as it is popularly known, was your second-place pick.

Our Pick: CANDLELIGHTERS OF SOUTHERN NEVADA

Candlelighters of Southern Nevada is one of those nonprofit organizations you hope you'll never have to deal with except as a donor or volunteer. Candlelighters is dedicated to combating childhood cancer and offers services -- information, financial assistance, support groups, counseling -- to children who have cancer and their families. It's one of those groups you hope you'll never need, but, if you do, it's one you'll be eternally grateful for.
