Place to Hike

Readers' Pick: RED ROCK CANYON NATIONAL CONSERVATION AREA

West of Las Vegas off
Charleston Boulevard
Las Vegans, be thankful you're about 15 miles from a place that'll make the city seem far, far away. Hikers can tackle anything from an easy, short stroll through the desert around the visitor center to a strenuous trek that'll require skills more akin to rock climbing than hiking. Mount Charleston was your second-favorite walking getaway.

Our Pick: MOUNT CHARLESTON

Northwest of Las Vegas via U.S. 95 and state Routes 156 and 157
Once the snow begins to melt and the roads are easily passable, Mount Charleston gets crowded. Fortunately, the mountain is big enough for everybody, particularly if you're willing to set out from the pavement, picnic areas and parking lots to experience the beauty the mountain offers. And, in the summer, the lower temperatures on the mountain are an added benefit that we don't take lightly.
