Place to Go on a Budget

Readers' Pick: FREMONT STREET EXPERIENCE

For the second consecutive year, word has spread that Glitter Gulch now offers good entertainment on the ground, along with the digital light shows beneath its four-block canopy. Monthly themes -- such as swing, '50s or Mardi Gras weekends -- bring classic rockers such as Eddie Money and Iron Butterfly to free outdoor stages, and the street is lined with low-priced food and booze vendors from the downtown hotels. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area placed a distant second, despite a $5 cover charge to drive the loop.

Our Pick: LAS VEGAS DRIVE-INS

4150 W. Carey Ave.
Forget for a moment that God meant for movies to be seen outdoors. When you do the math, there's no better value for first-run movies than the good ol' drive-in, where the $5.50 admission works out to $2.75 per movie if you stay for the double feature. If you really want to low-ball it, the price drops to $3.50 on Tuesdays, when the "dollar dogs" mean you don't even have to pack your own sandwiches. One caveat: Try to pick a movie with a lot of daylight scenes. Surrounding development is making it hard to see the scary ones.
