The awards are presented to people who have shown a commitment to higher education and have played a role in the state's cultural, scientific and social advancement. Tennis star Andre Agassi, whose foundation focuses on helping young people, finished second.

This may sound self-serving since this charitable trust was created by the founder of Donrey Media Group, which owns the Review-Journal. However, the foundation has been generous in spreading its bounty among a variety of Southern Nevada organizations, such as the Boys and Girls Club of Las Vegas; KNPR-FM 89.5, the National Public Radio affiliate; the Assistance League; and Nevada Ballet Theatre. In fact, the foundation is encouraging Southern Nevada charitable groups to seek its assistance.
