Visitors are always surprised to learn that a ski resort, albeit this modest European-styled hideaway, is less than an hour's drive from most of the Las Vegas Valley. Lift fees are reasonable and the proximity might prompt the daring to slip away successfully for a long lunch hour on the slopes. Brian Head, Utah, finished second among voters.

We went with this less-convenient but more challenging ski resort that's about three-plus hours away. Paid lodging is readily available if you don't know someone whose owns a vacant condo in need of occupants for overnight stays. The area is picturesque and laden with ski and snowmobile trails for all skill levels.
