This popular corner quick-serve outlet scored an upset in this newly revisited category with a convincing victory over the runner-up Farm Basket. The folks at Popeye's have got to be excited about knocking off much bigger chains. The popular takeout location seems to draw no shortage of people who swear they know the real thing.

When folks claim, "It's like eating in your own dining room," they are not kidding around. The Hill Top (what hill?) House is indeed inside a converted shingle-sided home and is still drawing a loyal clientele even as the once rural area is slowly being engulfed by more malls and city folk. The restaurant features an excellent salad bar and a mostly basic menu of steaks, seafood and chicken joined by a nonbuffet staple, frog legs. But the pan-fried chicken, described by one Texan on the staff as "the real thing," remains among the best-selling items.
