Southern Cooking

Readers' Pick:
BIG MAMA'S
2230 W. Bonanza Road
Big Mama's doesn't mess around with any of that fancy new stuff that's on the Food Channel. There's just no need with authentic recipes that filtered down through the family. That means authentic Creole and Cajun dishes. Everything is "tender as a mother's love," to quote an advertisement that also suggests everyone come on down and "Put some South in your mouth." Somewhat surprisingly, the far less soulful Country Inn was just a few votes behind to take second place.

Our Pick:
HUSH PUPPY
7185 W. Charleston Blvd.
1820 N. Nellis Blvd.
All right, we'll cop to it. Sometimes we don't eat all day to make sure we're ravenous enough for one of the Hush Puppy's nights when it's all the catfish or crab legs you can gobble down in a session.
