INTEL: Security conferences partner, local chains increase international presence


The International Tourism Safety Association, the Las Vegas Security Chiefs Association and ISC West will co-locate their events in one venue in 2014. Both the International Tourism Safety Conference and ISC West will be held during the first week of April at the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

The International Tourism Safety Conference is an annual gathering for hundreds of safety and security officials in the travel and tourism industry worldwide. It focuses on providing delegates with new information, trends, equipment, strategies and best practices in keeping visitors safe. ISC West is a security trade show and launching pad for new products and technologies.

“This is a great opportunity for attendees of both events as they’ll be able to share more information and gain added insight on the latest safety strategies, technology and equipment,” said Ray Suppe, president of the International Tourism Safety Association and director of security for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The International Tourism Safety Conference and ISC West will manage their own events but will combine some functions, such as marketing, sharing meeting space and complementing show hours where appropriate for attendees’ benefit. The International Tourism Safety Conference will run April 2-3; ISC West will run April 2-4.

With a new partnership, Spreadshirt has been able to slash its international shipping rates by up to 57 percent.

Recently, the e-commerce site contracted with RR Donnelly to manage international shipping logistics and optimize pricing and levels of service for customers. Since then, shipping time has dropped from one to six weeks to one to two weeks and the site was able to lower its international shipping prices from $13.99 to $7.50. Locales that have seen the biggest benefits from the new partnership are Australia, Brazil and European markets.

Henderson-based pediped is expanding its international presence.

The children’s footwear brand opened a second store in Shanghai in late October at the outdoor shopping center, Daning International. The other Shanghai-based store is in the Nanfang Friendship Shopping Center. This marks the company’s fifth store opening this year.

The new store sells more than 100 American Podiatric Medical Association-accepted styles between the three pediped signature lines: Originals, Grip ‘n’ Go and FLEX. The brand’s footwear is available for boys and girls, ranging from newborn to 8.

In the next three to five years, the company plans to open 20 branded boutiques both domestically and internationally.

Department stores are coming up, a new forecast shows.

In its latest research, released in November, IBISWorld forecast department stores to yield positive sales gains through 2018. Because these traditional stores depend almost entirely on household income, they suffered during the recession when disposable income and consumers’ confidence diminished.

On the strength of the economic recovery, revenue is forecast to increase at an annualized rate of 1 percent over the next five years to total $207.9 billion. With rising sales, profit margins are likely to increase to about 6.2 percent of revenue in 2018, providing much needed relief to industry operators, IBISWorld said.

Competition from online retailers, however, is expected to place price pressures on industry operators, while even more companies shift to the warehouse clubs and supercenters industry. Recent economic improvements are expected to relieve some of the industry’s overall struggles and revenue is estimated to grow 2.2 percent in 2013.
