Virgin, Allegiant adding Vegas flights

Two airlines are promising new flights to Las Vegas before the end of the year.

Virgin Atlantic Airlines, which offers nonstop flights to McCarran International Airport from London’s Gatwick International and Manchester, England, plans to experiment with weekly nonstop round trips on Wednesdays from Glasgow, Scotland, during the month of September.

Flights begin Sept. 10 for what is being called seasonal service.

Airlines routinely try routes for short periods to assess their viability before a long-term commitment.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air has announced twice-weekly nonstop round trips from Las Vegas to Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport beginning Dec. 18.

The airline will fly a 215-seat Boeing 757 jet on the route Thursdays and Sundays.

Allegiant, a deep-discount carrier that generates revenue through numerous ancillary fees, is focusing on Cincinnati because it has some of the highest average air fares in the country.

Las Vegas will be the seventh market served by Allegiant from the Cincinnati airport. The airline offers 20 flights a week there.

For the first time, the owners of Las Vegas-based Tahiti Village are introducing a restaurant that’s open to the public.

Previously, only guests were able to enjoy the restaurants.

Now, 17° South, helmed by Chef John Gremo, a graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the university’s executive chef for 20 years prior to joining the Tahiti Village family, is offering a diverse and affordable menu.

Items range from shrimp cocktail to chicken wings, as well as specialty pizzas, burgers and fries.

“I am thrilled to be a part of this new culinary experience at Tahiti Village and am happy to share some new menu items with our guests, tourists visiting Las Vegas and our locals,” said Chef Gremo.

Todd Spector, president of Somerpointe Resorts, owns Tahiti Village.

“We knew we needed the right person to help us put 17° South on the map,” he said. “As it is our first foray into a dining experience which will serve a much larger population, the team worked tirelessly to design and perfect a menu, which was panel-tested on numerous occasions prior to opening, to ensure we selected the perfect items which Chef Gremo would be proud to introduce to our very diversified customer base.”

“We wanted the fare to be special, diverse, offer a little of something for everyone and most importantly be welcoming to all and affordable to the entire dining community we serve,” Chef Gremo added.

Reservations are not necessary and the restaurant, which is located at 7200 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, and the bar is open from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. daily.
