Community leaders to gather at African-American job summit Friday
Community leaders and elected officials will gather Friday in the south valley to discuss how to improve the economic climate and job market for African-Americans, according to an announcement from the lieutenant governor’s office.
The event is open to the public and will take place from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the third floor of the InNEVation Center, at 6795 Edmond St., near Warm Springs Road and Decatur Boulevard.
“This event is important because as the Nevada economy continues to recover from the recession, it is important to look at economic and demographic groups to ensure that all regions and groups are seeing and reaping a benefit,” said Bill Anderson, Nevada chief economist, who will be presenting at the event.
As of December, 13.5 percent of African-Americans in Nevada are unemployed, according to a report from the Nevada Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation. That rate is disproportionate in comparison to Caucasians, who saw a 6.1 percent unemployment rate, and Hispanics, who saw a 8 percent unemployment rate.
