Sweat Store targets sartorially savvy workout enthusiasts

It’s not every day you’ll find fashion-forward workout clothing for both yoga and cage-fighting enthusiasts, but a new store in the Summerlin area is focusing on hitting both demographics.

The husband-and-wife team of John and Noelani Alessio have opened The Sweat Store in a shopping center off Flamingo Road at the Las Vegas Beltway in hopes of purveying brand-name workout clothing not otherwise available in the Las Vegas area.

The couple believes that sweat and fashion are not exclusive of each other, so they have created a shop with a boutique feel that caters to shoppers who like to work out and do yoga while wearing some creative fashions.

John Alessio, 33, is a mixed martial arts fighter; his wife, Noelani, 29, is a bartender at the XS in at Encore.

They have invested $60,000 to launch the retail shop. A friend and yoga instructor, Meghan Troy, has invested 10 percent in the business.

The store that opened June 6 has the motto, “Look good while you sweat,” focusing mostly on the female demographic. During the grand opening this month, the store was even blessed during a Hawaiian ceremony.

The Sweat Store is bringing new brands to the Las Vegas area such as Body Rock Sport, NUX USA and Green Apple Active, Alessio said.

Las Vegas-based brands to be included in the store are BlueFit Clothing and Syndicate Worldwide, he said.

Alessio said he and his wife want to open a second store and are on a waiting list for retail space next to a health food cafe called Greens and Proteins on Eastern Avenue in Henderson near the Las Vegas Beltway.

The 1,400-square-foot Summerlin store at 9809 Flamingo Road is also next to a Greens and Proteins restaurant.

Alessio described The Sweat Store as a miniversion of a Lululemon shop and said, “There is nothing like us in Las Vegas.”

Initially, Alessio, along with his wife, Troy and his sister-in-law, will be the employees. They hope to hire more workers as the business grows, he said.
