Tonapah hospital files for bankruptcy protection

The only hospital in Tonapah and for miles around filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Friday.

The Nye Regional Medical Center, a 10-bed facility operated under the corporate name Primecare Nevada Inc., resorted to bankruptcy protection but provided little detail in its court papers. However, hospital officials have been quoted for more than a year as facing the prospect of shutting down if it could not find additional funding sources.

According to state statistics, the hospital generated a $11.1 million in revenues last year.

Nye Regional, a nonprofit, had mapped out ambitious plans to expand but has not carried them out. According to the hospital’s website, it is about 200 miles from the nearest major hospital and trauma center, so its physicians and staff must practice a broad range of medicine rather than stick to narrow specialties.
