It’s been two days now, and I’m still not sure quite what to make of the trailer for Fox’s “Gotham.”
The hotly anticipated drama, set to debut this fall, follows the rise of iconic Gotham City Det. James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) while keeping tabs on the young men and women — in some cases VERY young men and women — who will go on to become Batman, Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face, Poison Ivy and The Joker.
Judging from the two-minute clip, it could be a gritty tale set in a beloved criminal underworld as Gordon and his partner, Harvey Bullock (the always awesome Donal Logue), investigate the murders of billionaires Thomas and Martha Wayne that were witnessed by their 12-year-old son, Bruce (David Mazouz). After all, McKenzie rubbed away all that teen-friendly shine of “The O.C.” during his five seasons on the vastly underappreciated cop drama “Southland.”
Or “Gotham” could end up feeling a lot more like the “Batman” version of “Muppet Babies.”
At this point, it’s pretty much a pick’em.
Hopefully, we’ll get some more footage on Monday when Fox formally announces its 2014-15 schedule, which already includes newcomers “Backstrom,” starring “The Office’s” Rainn Wilson as an off-kilter Portland detective; the hip-hop drama “Empire”; the ancient-Egyptian drama “Hieroglyph”; the children’s hospital drama “Red Band Society”; the relationship comedy “Weird Loners”; “Mulaney,” starring stand-up comic John Mulaney; and a comedy in which Will Forte plays the titular “Last Man on Earth.”
Until then, here’s that trailer:
