MOUNTAIN WEST WARNING

It seems things won’t get any easier for UNLV and other Mountain West Conference baseball programs when seeing Stephen Strasburg next spring.

Sure, the San Diego State pitcher was facing the Netherlands (which appears a few notches above Henderson Paseo Verde Little League) on Thursday, but he did respond to his first Olympics experience by taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning of a 7-0 win.

"We didn’t have much of a chance against him," said Netherlands manager Bob Eenhoorn.

Strasburg has been followed the past few days by reporters from Washington, D.C., and San Diego, reporting on him back to the two towns whose major league teams are among those battling for the worst record and No. 1 pick in next year’s amateur draft.

The U.S. (1-1 in pool play) scored four in the fourth, which included a double by Terry Tiffee of the 51s.
