New CDs you need

Three recommended new CDs released today:

Mastodon, “Once More ‘Round The Sun”: Go back and listen to the prog-metal snarl of “Remission,” Mastodon’s lead-dense 2002 debut, and it’s hard to imagine the band becoming as melodically refined as they have on “Sun,” an album as haunting and harmony-laden as it is heavy.

Strand of Oaks, “HEAL”: The title says it all: this album of New Wave-inspired indie rock is all about healing old wounds in song. “I spent 10 long years feelin’ so bad,” sings Timothy Showalter on the title track, exorcising all those bad times to make room for the good.

Jad Fair & Danielson, “Solid Gold Heart”: “We deserve chocolate cake and we deserve apple pie: enjoy your life.” That lyric, taken from “Ready Steady,” encapsulates the scruffy, sunshine-bright pop pick-me-ups from these two indie rock lifers. “Solid Gold Heart” will make you smile. Promise.
