Local TV news ratings were shaken up

The May television sweeps reflect a market in transition, with upstart stations KVVU-TV, Channel 5 and KTNV-TV, Channel 13 moving in front in key time slots.

For the first time in many years, longtime market powers KSNV-TV, Channel 3 and KLAS-TV, Channel 8 did not finish first in a major newscast time period in demographic ratings, adults 25-54, the key selling demo for advertisers.

Both stations have changed hands since late last year.

Nielsen’s May ratings show Fox Network affiliate KVVU and ABC’s KTNV tied for first in the 5 p.m. newscast in the adults 25-54 demographic.

NBC affiliate KSNV was third with a 1.1 demo rating. CBS’ KLAS had a 1.0.

KTNV, recently purchased by Scripps, led the 6 p.m. time slot, with a 1.4 demo rating. KLAS was second at 1.3. KVVU and KSNV were tied at 1.0.

The 11 p.m. competition was tight, with KVVU in first at 2.0 and KSNV second at 1.9. KTNV was a tick back at 1.8, and KLAS had a 1.6.

Fox5 dominates the 6 a.m. newscast with a 2.9. KSNV was second at 1.8. KLAS came in at 1.2 and KTNV at .8.

KTNV won the midday demo ratings at 1.1, with KLAS second at .7 and KSNV third at .3.
