Gibbons to send envoy to White House stimulus discussion

CARSON CITY — Gov. Jim Gibbons will send Deputy Chief of Staff Mendy Elliott to a White House conference at which state officials can discuss how best to spend federal stimulus funds.

The White House said the conference Thursday is intended to make clear the need for effective, transparent and efficient spending of the money.

The White House invited each governor to send one senior official to the event.

Elliot will look for the administration to clarify the “mechanics” of receiving and spending the stimulus funds, Gibbons’ spokesman Daniel Burns said today.

Gibbons has questioned whether Nevada should accept unemployment funds from the stimulus because it might force the state to continue providing money when the stimulus funds run out.

President Barack Obama signed the $787 billion stimulus measure in February.

Cabinet members and other administration officials will speak at the conference. But Burns said the president is not expected to attend.
