2013 NBA Draft was special!

What a great time to be a Rebel fan!

As you all know by now, our own Anthony Bennett (#15) was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday night's NBA Draft. He was chosen by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The GM of the Cavaliers said in an interview that they had whittled it down to two choices as of Wednesday night and on Thursday morning they knew who they wanted. When asked who the other player was, he laughed, but did not give a name. Bennett was UNLV's second No. 1 overall pick (Larry Johnson) and he's the first Canadian to be picked No. 1 overall.

Many of us watched Anthony when he played high school ball at Findlay Prep and knew he was a special player. When he chose UNLV for college, we were pleasantly surprised and knew he would be a "short-timer" in the program due to his athletic ability.

I heard from friends all over the country last night who know how much of a Rebel fan I am and how happy I must have been. I'll admit it, I cried a little. I was watching my iPad at work, because my computer crashed just moments before the start of the draft. I screamed in the office and the programmers who sit next to me stood up and just looked at me. I yelled "Anthony Bennett #1 to the Cleveland Cavaliers!" and they didn't care much. LOL. Then of course I went right to twitter and my phone started blowing up. I know you guys care! It was a fun night!

Our point guard from last year, Anthony Marshall, was not drafted, but will play for the Miami Heat in the NBA Summer League (which is held here in Las Vegas over the next few weeks). Hopefully he'll get a contract as well.

Other locals getting drafted were Shabazz Muhammad (UCLA), who was selected by Utah in the first round, then traded to Minnesota and Pierre Jackson (Baylor), who went in teh second 2nd round to Philadelphia and was then traded to New Orleans.

Other Mountain West Conference kids getting drafted were Tony Snell (UNM) to the Chicago Bulls, Jamaal Franklin (SDSU) to the Memphis Grizzlies and Colton Iverson (CSU) to the Indiana Pacers. It was a very exciting night for Rebel fans and Mountain West fans altogether!

It's been a good month for Rebel fans as former basketball player, Joel Anthony, got another ring for winning his second NBA championship with the Miami Heat.

Well, Rebel fans, I'm looking forward to seeing all of you in September at our first home football game, if not before then at the Desert Reign tournament or NBA Summer League.

GO REBELS!
