The Rebel football team had been on a roll, beating Reno and only needing one more win to be bowl eligible. But it seems they they are going to keep us guessing if that's going to happen. The last 2 weekends, they had home games at Sam Boyd Stadium and both weeks came away with a close loss. Saturday night vs. Utah State, it came down to the few last plays, but they couldn't get it in the end zone. The small crowd on hand in the chilly, November weather left sad, once again.
We had a great tailgate before the Utah State with our friends, Mike & Nickie, making a beef brisket that melted in your mouth. Everyone contributed so much food, that I had to invite the folks from the neighboring tailgate to help us eat it all! I was excited 2 of my good friends both showed up with their kids so my young daughter had some friends to play with. Thanks for coming Jen Yant and Brett Steidler!
The football team is off this weekend, then plays on Thursday, November 21 on ESPNU in Colorado Springs against the Air Force Academy. The last home game of the season is November 30 against San Diego State (Time TBA) . I'm hoping they win both of those and get that bowl invitation for the first time since 2000.
The Runnin' Rebels opened their season last Friday night against Portland State. There were many new faces and lineups to get used to. The Rebels won by 19 points. A couple of players who stuck out to me were Roscoe Smith and Kendall Smith. Kendall was chosen as MW Preseason Freshman of the Year, and I can see why! I'm excited to see what the whole team does this year. Bryce Dejean-Jones missed the opener after suffering a hamstring injury in the first exhibition game, but he'll be back in a couple of weeks.
The next test for the Runnin' Rebels are the pesky UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos. They are always a tough opponent. That game is Tuesday at 7 p.m. Then on Friday the Rebs take on Nebraska-Omaha at 7 p.m. Hope to see you there! The Lady Rebels have a home game vs. BYU on Tuesday night at the Thomas & Mack at 4 p.m.
If you're a Runnin' Rebel fan, you should be interested in supporting local basketball talent. Wear your Rebel Red and head to Henderson International School on Saturday night at 7 p.m. to see the Findlay Pilots play. Once again, they've got some great kids playing for them.
