This is an inside baseball kind of story, but those who watch politics will be inclined to wonder: "Wow, did the king of Nevada kingmaking, R&R Partners, just screw the governor of Nevada?"
Get a load of this story by Las Vegas Sun's Anjeanette Damon. Pete Ernaut, president of government affairs at R&R Partners and a longtime friend of Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, advised the governor to get behind the More Cops bill in the Nevada Legislature.
The bill was a much-discussed item within the Sandoval camp. Many argued the other way. But Ernaut prevailed.
What Ernaut didn't tell anyone when he offered his advice, according to the story, is that Ernaut was at the same time getting paid to lobby for the Las Vegas Police Protective Association.
That's a conflict.
Sandoval ought to be miffed. This is the kind of thing that can become "dirt" in future campaigns. And it can erode credibility with Sandoval's decision-making. Ernaut should have declared his conflict and Sandoval should have excused him from the decision-making process.
