HORNED FROGS TAKE EARLY LEAD

Texas Christian has looked the part of BCS contender in jumping out to a 14-7 lead over UNLV after one quarter at Sam Boyd Stadium.

The 12th-ranked Horned Frogs outgained the Rebels 114-27 in the opening period and held a 14-0 advantage before the Rebels scored.

UNLV got on the board after the Horned Frogs’ backup punt returner muffed his second punt of the quarter and gave the Rebels the ball at the 12-yard line. He had recovered his own fumble on the first blunder, but the second cost TCU points.

TIRED DEFENSE

UNLV’s defense has struggled enough of late.

The last thing it needs is to be worried about fatigue this early in the game. TCU’s opening drive consisted of 17 plays, leaving the Rebel defense on the field for nearly eight minutes.

On the positive side for the Rebels defense, the unit was only on the field for three plays before the Horned Frogs reached the end zone on their second possession.

THREE-AND-OUT

UNLV received the opening kickoff and went three-and-out.

This could be the theme of the night, though the opening possession could actually have been much worse.

On third down, Omar Clayton was intercepted and the ball was run back inside UNLV’s 15-yard line. TCU was offsides on the play, however, and the Rebels threw an incompletion before punting.

PREMATURE CELEBRATION

Late in the first quarter, UNLV recovered a muffed punt to take control of the ball at the TCU 12-yard line.

Following the play, streamers and confetti were set off as if a touchdown had been scored.

The score was 14-0 at the time.
