MUSIC: Smith Center sets summer concert lineup

And the hits just keep on coming.

After two months in action, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts has announced its summer lineup for Reynolds Hall, packed with star names from Steve Martin to Stephen Sondheim.

“Wicked” Tony-winner Idina Menzel — alias “Glee’s” Shelby Corcoran — checks in June 10 for a concert of pop and musical theater favorites.

July’s lineup includes jazz trumpeter Chris Botti and CTA featuring Danny Seraphine, (playing favorites from Chicago and CTA) and k.d. lang with new band Siss Boom Bang.

On July 14, Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim reflects on “A Life in the Theater: An Evening of Music and Conversation,” which pairs Sondheim’s reminiscences of helping to create musical landmarks from “West Side Story” to “Sweeney Todd” with performances by Tony-winners Christine Ebersole and Brian Stokes Mitchell.

Grammy-winning jazz singer Diana Krall arrives Aug. 13; on Aug. 22, Steve Martin and his Steep Canyon Rangers perform “An Evening of Bluegrass and Comedy.” Rounding out the August concert schedule: the Symphonic Rock Show, which features a 21-piece orchestra, a giant video screen, lasers and pyrotechnics along with performances of classic rock anthems. (If it sounds familiar, it should; the show played the Henderson Pavilion earlier this month.)

In between the concerts, of course, Reynolds Hall will host tours of the Broadway musicals “Million Dollar Quartet” (June 12-17), “Memphis” (July 18-22) and “La Cage aux Folles” (Aug. 14-19).

Tickets to the summer concerts, priced from $26, go on sale next Friday, April 27, and may be purchased online at www.thesmithcenter.com or by phone at 749-2000.
