Program director, staffers depart AM radio station

Sunset’s come for some employees at K-Dawn.
Charlotte Burke, program director at news/talk station KDWN-AM, 720 has resigned effective Friday, and four employees in the news and traffic departments have left in a round of layoffs.
“We’re like any other industry in the country and due to a declining economy, we’re consolidating positions,” says station spokesman Tom Humm, who declined to identify the dismissed employees. Humm also insists that Burke’s resignation is unconnected to the layoffs, and that she wanted to spend more time with her family. In the spirit of that consolidation, Burke’s responsibilities will be assumed by news director John Shaffer.
Burke’s resume prior to K-Dawn included a stint as vice president/general manager of SIRIUS Satellite’s Martha Stewart Living Radio, which she launched in 2005. Additionally, she was executive editor of CBS News Radio, where she also served as a news anchor and correspondent.
In a prepared statement from the Beasley Broadcast Group, which owns K-Dawn, Burke said, “It’s been great to work for a company that understands the importance of family and has supported me in this very important decision.”
The station has 20 employees spread across news, traffic, programming, sales, administrative, promotions and engineering departments, but some of those employees also work for Beasley’s other stations, which include KKLZ-FM, 96.3 (“Classic Hits”), KFRH-FM, 102.7 (“Fresh 102.7”) and KCYE-FM, 104.3 (“Coyote Country”).
