Residential Center (a non-profit organization) Phone: (702)871-5448 E-mail: mvc@vegas.infi.net Who and what we areNike House was founded by prominent Las Vegas businesswoman and philanthropist, Dorothy D. Brimacombe and was incorporated on May 1, 1972 as a private, non-profit organization to house abused girls. Nike House is fully accredited and licensed by the state of Nevada Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse and the Nevada State Division of Health. Most of the residents are referred to the program from Clark County through the juvenile court and State Division of Child and Family Services. Residents range in age from 13 to 17.Nike House has evolved from a short-term program (6 months or less), to a long-term program that provides a broad range of therapeutic interventions including physical/sexual/substance abuse and associated areas of dysfunction, neglect, CHINS (Children in Need of Supervision), and delinquent behaviors. Nike House provides a supportive and structured home atmosphere to facilitate change in the unhealthy attitudes and behaviors that have brought the girls to the facility. Nike House acts as a home and family where its residents can experience acceptance, safety, support and gain insight into themselves and their circumstances. Many of the girls have been permanently displaced from their families and homes. The extended time in Nike House is due to the increased severity of problems that the young women bring to the program. Each client receives a broad range of treatment services: individual, group, and family counseling, daily behavior management counseling, individual case management, individual treatment planning, academic assistance including an in-home tutorial program, recreational activities, medical, dental, and vision care, independent living skills classes, discharge planning, aftercare and follow-up. Clients remain involved with the community through school, peer relations, work and leisure activities, and community service. All clients attend public school and are encouraged to fully participate in all academic pursuits and extracurricular activities. Clients are encouraged to maintain healty, positive relations with friends, visit home (when appropriate), go on outings and date. Clients learn new ways of participating in positive, drug-free leisure activities. A growing number of girls entering the program find themselves without parental resources or a support system. Nike House has implemented independent living skills training where the girls receive instruction on the skills they will need to live successfully on their own. They are also encouraged to develop an outside support system. Nike House participates fully in the local CASA and mentoring programs. In addition, Nike House has developed a guest speaker program utilizing the varied youth oriented resources in the community. With the help of continued community assistance, Nike House will remain a dynamic, viable program dedicated to caring for teenage girls with limited resources and options. Community InvolvementAt Nike House we believe community involvement is very important. Therefore we participate weekly in the Bring A Pet program at the Charleston Residential Hotel and visit with the elderly residents. We plan to sponsor a Christmas crafts party and do some Christmas caroling.We participated in the Paint A Drain program on National Recycle Day and plan to participate in the Great American Smoke Out. We also participate in weekly activities at the Boys & Girls Club. | ||||||||||||||||
