The Nevada Test Site, located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, larger than the state of Rhode Island (1,350 square miles), played a significant role in winning the Cold War. Its place in history is indelibly marked by 928 nuclear weapon tests.  Once shrouded in secrecy, highly protected by security, records and artifacts of the Test Site's legacy have become more accessible to the public and researchers.   The Nevada Test Site is located in south central Nevada, in Nye County.  It can be reached by driving northwest from Las Vegas Nevada on U.S. highway 95. Free monthly tours are provided by the U.S. Department of Energy.  Interested members of the public may contact Brenda Carter at (702) 295-0944 for tour schedules, information and registration. Opened in December 1950, the site's first nuclear device test, dubbed Able, was an air drop on January 27, 1951.   The Test Site has produced many products, services and new construction methods.  We will describe these items in the future.
