    Newsletters

The Spring Mountains ECHO is published four or more times a year. It is distributed to members and interested parties at no charge. Additionally, free copies are available to the public at the U. S. Forest Service offices. Beginning in 1997, we plan to make about 300 copies of each publication available through the Las Vegas libraries and visitor centers. Previously, the same number of copies were distributed via bulk mailing. The association strives to include articles about group activities for members to learn more about the Spring Mountains, philosophy, safety, botany etc.

    Special Events

Two annual events highlight the association's calendar.

Smokey's Winter Holiday celebrates the winter season with a program to highlight fire safety according to Smokey Bear in an environment designed to entertain children from two to 102. Smokey comes out of hibernation and provides us with an opportunity to inform the public about the story of Smokey Bear, fire-safety and to meet with the U. S. Forest Service personnel in an informal setting. In 1997 we are planning to move the event to Saturday morning in hopes of attracting more youngsters.

The Festival In The Pines is an annual affair held on Mt. Charleston showcasing all the fun things to do in the Spring Mountains. At this day long event, we require booth participants to have a demonstration of equipment and skills pertinent to activities they enjoy doing in the mountains. In addition to booths, we seek out local clubs who can hold a sporting event on the day of the festival. In 1996 the Las Vegas High Rollers and Strollers held a nationally advertised Volksmarch. Our goal is for the attendees to take with them an appreciation of the mountains and increased knowledge in how to enjoy them. Over 2,000 attended the 1996 festival.

    Meet The Mountain Car Tours

About every six weeks, our association sponsors a tour in the Spring Mountains. Currently Bob Maichle puts together a handout with an itinerary and a brief description of the items to be discussed at each stop. Additional information is added as appropriate. Mr. Maichle is a local Las Vegan well versed in history, geology, topography et al. From time to time other people knowledgeable in their own right are invited. The car tours are advertised in the ECHO and the local newspapers. Although the group may be limited to protect the environment, efforts are made to include all-comers. To my knowledge everyone has always been included.
